From Manure Management to Growing Food...

We have spent the past 25 years in very Northern Maryland on the border with Pennsylvania.   A few years I brought my horses home onto our small 2-acre property.  That simple act launched us into sustainability practices which evolved into growing and preserving our own food.

While we dream of moving to a homestead up North, we maximize the use of our small property.

Did you know that sourdough dates back 6,000 years ago? History and Science is worth learning! it amazes me that someone came up with this process. Day 5 of gluten free sourdough starter. So far so good, as expected. Tell-tale sourdough smell is happening! #blowathighdough

I’ve waited so long to do this because I know being that it is gluten-free, it’s going to be more difficult. If I was doing regular sourdough, I would’ve been doing this along time ago. at any rate, I thought I would do some updates as I experiment. We keep our house temperature around 66 to 69 in the winter. this was my problem-solving for that end of things. I’m using the King Arthur gluten-free recipe that is online. I think it’s calling for too much flour, but I will alter this recipe as I find the sweet spot. if you are looking for anything I show here, I should have it in my Amazon link in my insta bio. If I don’t, let me know and I’ll make sure I have it there. #glutenfree #sourdough #glutenfreesourdough

All the talk of drone activity, here’s our contribution from Norrisville Maryland. If you know Dean, you know that he is always looking up in the sky, looking for “the mothership” to take him away 🤣 I’ve even joked about the fact that I can look on the security video in the morning and see him stop before he gets in his car, and he looks up into the sky just in case there’s anything there. he frequently points things out to me that are odd in the sky, but the other night, he saw a lot of activity, more than what is in this video, but he didn’t have his phone with him. By the time he got his phone, there was less activity, and he also is struggling because he only has sight in one eye, so hard to video. #drones #maryland #harfordcounty #harfordcountymd

Well, it’s time to strap the back legs 🤣. I was reviewing the footage and it’s too hard to see, but when that went down on his neck, he ran to get comfort from the other horses, and the other horses didn’t understand what was going on and thought some sort of monster was after them. 😆 No one was hurt, and in fact, the blanket was not even damaged. It reminded me of the time that Westley thought he was being a big boy and grabbed a fallen branch that started chasing him. 😂

Gluten free sourdough venture begins tomorrow. This will get interesting. I’m going to be supplementing with psyllium husk. Not sure how it will go, but going to give it a good try. Side note: My starter will be completely GF. However, I will be using it to make both GF bread and non-GF bread as I want to not only compare, but also try it and see if I can tolerate sourdough. There is a myth out there that the fermentation changes something regarding the gluten. I don't believe it, but I will be willing to be a guinea pig.
